How are groups organised?

We organise our classes by mixed ability. The students have two one-hour lessons per fortnight.

What characteristics does a successful student have in this subject?

The most successful students in this subject will enjoy working visually, practically, will be passionate about creating images and artefacts and will sustain their focus on long-term projects.

What are the key concepts students will study at this level?

What will students learn at this level?

The overarching theme for all students in Year 8 is ‘Conflict’.  

Starting the Autumn term with Nash, Nevinson, Moore, Piper, Goya and Dix – as well as ‘War Art from WW1, WW2, Dada and Banksy.

Students will explore observational skills in recording what they see in front of them – natural objects, artefacts and other artists’ work images and ideas.

They will look at key artists and ideas to assist them in developing their own images. Students will look at visual artists, writers, poets, filmmakers, musicians – who have created work based on the theme of ‘Conflict’

Students will draw, paint, print, and create textures and repeating patterns – using analogue and digital techniques – they will learn to sample other artists’ work through collage, tracing and PhotoShop.

Student will explore the possibilities and potential to express their own personalities and ideas.

Students will learn how to develop their ideas in relation to artists' work and contexts - War Art and Poetry from WW1, WW2 and Dada.

What skills will students develop at this level

Students will learn how to develop their ideas in relation to artists’ work and contexts – War Art and Poetry from WW1, WW2 and Dada.

Experiment with a range of materials and techniques – drawing, painting, collage, sampling and PhotoShop.

Record what they see and experience through drawing, writing – interpretation and empathy.

Realise intentions to create finished outcomes and artworks.

How will students learn at this level?

Through the practices of drawing with a range of media; looking at, analysing and interpreting artists’ images and ideas; trying different ways of expressing ideas and intentions.

Trial and error when experimenting with different artistic ideas

Peer and teacher constructive feedback tasks/discussion

Observing your peers

Reflecting on and explaining the processes experienced.

How will students’ learning be assessed at this level?

  • . Continuous monitoring of progress through informal observations and creative development tasks.
  1. Completed development work; experimentation, recording and composition/image.
  2. Reflection and evaluation.

When do key assessments take place?

All work will be continually monitored and assessed, with more formal assessments every half term.

How can parents/carers support students’ learning?

  • Discuss your current project work with you, show them what you are doing and explain what you have done.
  1. They may be able to take you to galleries and museums and encourage you to see links to your school work. Look at War films, images and Poetry about the theme of conflict
  2. Helping you to express yourself with confidence in your artwork.
