How are groups organised?
Classes are mixed ability. Lessons are based on approximately 6 week rotations so that students have the opportunity to experience different areas of Design and Technology during their academic year. The students have four one-hour lessons per fortnight.
What characteristics does a successful student have in this subject?
The most successful students in this subject will enjoy working practically, will be passionate about creating useful products, will enjoy problem solving and working out how things are made.

What will students learn at this level?
Whilst we are unable to access our workshops safely we have created some exciting design projects for students to complete. Year 8 students are designing a healthy sandwich suitable for a student of their age. They will research the importance of a healthy diet and look at food allergies as well as what makes a tasty sandwich. They will also study graphic products as they design and create the packaging for their sandwich, looking at colour, logos and three dimensional nets.
Food- You will revisit Health and Safety, hygiene, the government guidelines to healthy eating and practical skills. Skills gained include knife skills, pastry making and savoury alternative and use of the oven and hob.
Textiles- Culture theme pencil case/drawstring bag. You will revisit health and safety in the textile classroom. The project explores different cultures and the differences in their patterns and design. We look into the ancient art of block printing and create a culture inspired block, which is used to print fabric and make a product. You can also include decorative techniques and embellishment.
CAD/CAM- Keyring and introduction to Autodesk inventor. Using 2D design you will design a keyring then use a laser cutter to make it. You will also learn how to create constructional drawings using Autodesk inventor.
Metal work- Metal animal. You will learn about Health and Safety in the metal workshop. The project will help you to learn how to identify different types of metals. You will also braze, forge and plastic dip coat your animal.
Resistant materials/electronics- Lamp. You will use a variety of different materials to create a light sensitive lamp. During this project you will learn how to produce a scale drawing and build on your electronics and CAD knowledge and skills.

How will students’ learning be assessed at this level?
You will be assessed in two different areas during each rotation. You will use assessment sheets which will help to understand how you can progress in each area. Your teacher will also give you both verbal and written feedback during lessons.
When do key assessments take place?
Work is assessed at the end of each rotation. Each rotation is approximately six weeks.
How can parents/carers support students’ learning?
Encourage you to discuss your projects at home, perhaps research topics/recipes independently. Answer surveys and questionnaires, encourage you to watch design and manufacturing programme on the TV and visit exhibitions.
